Summer Safety Tips

Thoughts on Keeping Your Family Safe in Summer in Austin

What is the first thing you think of when summertime comes around? Some people
would answer swimming at the pool, enjoying picnics in the park, or grilling on the back
patio with friends. There are plenty of different ways to answer the question and no
matter how you decide to spend your remaining summer days, you definitely want to
make sure you follow some safety tips.

Sun Safety

Always be safe in the sun. Using sunblock should be your priority anytime you will be
outside. According to the National Safety Council, one in five Americans will develop
skin cancer in their lives. (Summer Safety) If you or your family plan on spending time in
the water, make sure you choose a sunblock that will stay on even when wet, and
reapply regularly.
Keep in mind that you can get sick from the heat very quickly. You need to spend some
time in an air-conditioned space at least a few hours a day, and stay indoors during the
hottest part of the day (early afternoon). If you are going to be outside, drink plenty of
water or other fluids to avoid dehydration.

Swimming Safety

Did you know? Drowning is still a leading cause of death for children under 14. Home swimming pools and lack of understanding of risk factors are two high influence factors in children drowning. Be aware.

Stay safe around the swimming pool: always supervise children who are swimming,
don’t run close to the water, and make sure you know where life preservers are
available. It’s best to swim in pools that have lifeguards on duty.
Never leave children or pets in a vehicle even for a few moments. It only takes a half an
hour for a vehicle to heat up to more than 160 degrees on a warm summer day. This
can result in illness, brain damage, or death in children or pets.
The summertime definitely means fun time, and when you remain safe, you and your
family will be able to enjoy all of the exciting warm weather activities.
